The first step to identify the goal for your filter - what does it need to accomplish? Generally this comes down to two options - improving the quality of the equipment itself, or improving the environment for the occupants of the building. Once you have determined the goal, you can begin to make your decision.
MERV (or, Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) Ratings help determine how well a filter does its job filtering out particles from 0.3 to 10 microns. The higher the rate the better a filter will be able to remove particles and air pollutants. You’ll also need to take into account that a higher rated filter will also require your system to work significantly harder to circulate air, so it’s important to find a filter that can do the job without hindering the efficiency of your system. You will need to assess the biggest pollutant concerns for your business, and determine the rating that will meet those requirements without causing too much strain on your unit. An MERV rating of 5-8 is where commercial buildings usually start, handling common concerns like mold spores, concrete dust, and mites as well as debris like sawdust and fibers. If you’re in a business requiring higher quality air standards, an MERV between 9 & 12 would likely be ideal, especially in a hospital laboratory setting. Surgical settings and inpatient care facilities would need MERV closer to the 13 to 16 range, to handle things like bacteria and fumes, and MERV 17-20 is beneficial to spaces that handle carcinogenic materials, manufacture pharmaceuticals, or are home to viruses or combustion smoke, or have a high concern surrounding allergens.
